Born and raised in Paris, Malkine made a career in the 1970s playing coffehouses and festivals, singing French folk songs. She lived in Shady, New York, near Woodstock. Arriving in the U.S. in 1952, her music career began in 1958 when she met folklorist Sam Eskin. Most of her songs are from the mountainous Auvergne region of France.
