He served twice as Governor. First from 9/16/1853-10/3/1853 as Speaker of the House assuming the Governorship in the absence of Governor Brown and Senate President R.J. Floyd, the second time as Senate President upon the death of Governor Milton on April 1,1865 until ousted by Federal authorities in the latter part of May 1865.
