General McCook was assigned to receive the surrender of the Confederate forces in Florida. On May 20, 1865 he took formal possession of Tallahassee and raised the US flag over the capitol.
Born in Stubenville, Ohio in 1833, went to Colorado at age 16. Was an early settler of the Pike's Peak region. A representative in the Kansas legislature in 1859. He served as a major, St. Col. and COl. of the 2nd Indian Cavalry. A commander at the battles of Perryville and Chickamauga. Made Brigadier General. Resigned from army in 1866, served as US minister to Hawaii and became territorial governor of Colorado in 1869. Died 1909.
