The spring is said to have been visited in 1513 by Ponce de Leon. It is believed to have been enclosed in 1565 when the first permanent settlement in the United States was established at Saint Augustine, Florida. Property purchased by Dr. Luella Day McConnell in 1901 who began to charge an admission price to drink from the waters of the free flowing spring found on the estate.
