Once called the 'Woody Guthrie of Vietnam,' Pham Duy wrote over 1000 songs. Born in Ha Noi in 1921, he trained in Paris in the 1940s. A part of the anti-French resistance, Pham Duy traveled Vietnam learning folk songs, and supporting regime change. In Spring 1966, as part of a cultural exchange program with the US, the 46 year old Saigon resident toured the United States. By the 1980s, Duy resided in California, still writing and performing.
