General Note
The term contraband was used to refer to runaway slaves who fled from southern plantations and farms to Union encampments during the Civil War.
Accompanying note: "April 17, 1862 Between Feb. 28 & Mar. 2, 1862, three transports from Key West and nine blockading vessels assembled off St. Marks bar, with the object of capturing the towns of St. Marks and Newport."
