How They Declare War

When a king wishes to declare war on his enemy, he does not send heralds to announce his intentions. He orders arrows with locks of hair attached to the notches to be stuck along the public ways. We observed this practice when we conducted King Outina, as a prisoner, through villages that he governed, to make them supply us with provisions. These arrows were later carried back to the fort by Ottigny.

This collection consists of digital copies (produced by the Archives) of 42 16th-century engraved illustrations by Theodore de Bry. The engravings are from the second volume in de Bry's series Grands Voyages chronicling the European exploration of the Americas. The second volume, "Der ander Theil, der newlich erfundenen Landschafft Americae, von dreyen Schiffahrten, so die Frantzosen in Floridam" (1591), was an account of the French attempt to establish a settlement in Florida and their experiences with the Timucua. De Bry's engraved illustrations are the earliest European images of Florida. A Flemish engraver, bookseller and publisher, de Bry produced the copper engravings with the help of his sons Jan Theodor and Jan Israel. As none of them had ever been to Florida, they were guided in their efforts by watercolors created by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533-1588), a French artist and mapmaker who was a member of the 1564 Laudonnière expedition.
