FAIR FEATURES

PRINCIPAL BUILDINGS AND GROUNDS.

Grounds located in Hyde Park, principal residence section of Tampa, and directly in rear of famous Tampa Bay Hotel grounds. Grounds 40 acres in extent, and within 5-minute walk of business center.

BUILDINGS.

Main exhibit building, dimensions 910 by 100 feet, devoted to agriculture, horticulture and other products of the soil.

Industrial building, dimensions 300 by 50 feet. Exhibits of manufacturers and other industrial products.

Woman's building, dimensions 100 by 85 feet, devoted to all varieties of women's work, educational work and display of art.

AMUSEMENT FEATURES.

The amusement street of the Florida State Fair is known as "The Range"- a name typical of Florida, as was "The Pike" at St. Louis to Missouri and "The Trail" at Portland, to Oregon. An alluring highway of amusement, affording an endless variety of clean and up-to-date attractions, gathered from all parts of the earth. The only real Midway ever seen in the South. Don't fail to "Run the Range."

Race couse, originally built by Henry B. Plant and made the fastest half-mile track in the South for the purposes of the Florida State Fair. Races visible from all parts of the grounds. Nine days of light harness and running races, beginning promptly at 2 p.m.

The Stadium, located inside the race track, where wonderful performances will be given daily by some of the mammoth spectacles that have made Luna Park famous.

Troop C. Twelgth U.S. Cavalry, will give, twice daily, drills and rough-riding exhibitions in the Stadium.

Don't fall to see "Fighting the Flames," 125 people, including a complete Fire Department, the greatest attraction ever produced at Coney Island, brough direct to Tampa and to be shown for the first time in the South.

See the mammoth spectacular production. "Eruption at Mont Pelee." This great attraction, which pleased many at the South Florida Fair, will be produced on an infinitely larger scale this year.

5 FLORIDA STATE FAIR

A FREEZELESS REGION.

The Great Freeze of 1895, which was unprecedented in the history of the State and deserves to be chronicled among our national disasters, destroyed 45,000 acres of bearing orange groves in Florida; while under the protection of the warm waters of Tampa Bay, the groves of Manatee County were passed over practically unhurt. There are presented the ease and comforts of a tropical country within forty hours of New York and Chicago.

YOU SHOULD NOT RETURN HOME BEFORE SEEING THIS WONDERFUL COUNTRY.

In addition to what is said of Alachua County on the inside back cover page, her lakes and streams abound in fish of all kinds and her forests contain deer, turkey, quail, coons, cats, hare and squirrels in abundance, while in winter ducks, brant, wild geese, snip and plover frequent our waters in numbers sufficient to satisfy the most ardent sportsman. NEW GOVERNMENT BUILDING.

RECORD OF TAMPA BUSINESS.

(Compiled From the Report of the past Year of Col. J. D. Calhoun, Secretary of the Tampa Board of Trade.)

GOVERNMENT REVENUE.- Total recepits for the year, $2,057,709.51. Gain, $281,514.33, or 14 per cent.

CIGAR INDUSTRY.- Output for the year, 196,961,00, a gain of 29,330,00 or 17 percent. Number of people employed, 8,700, gain of 15 per cent. Payroll for year, 46,084,00. Value of product, $13,713,860.

BANKING.- Deposits, December 31, 1904, $3,506,872, a gain of 10 per cent. The item of banking capital shows a gain of 55 per cent.

NEW BUILDINGS.- The increase in number one the previous year was 28 per cent in number and 40 per cent. in tonnage.

CITY COMMERCE.- Tonnage into Hillsborough bay from local and distant points, 321,000 tons- gain of 35 per cent. Moonthly arrivals of merchandise from West Indian, Gulf and Atlantic Coast points have more than doubled during the year.

STREET RAILWAY.- Number of passengers carried, including transfers, 6,278,451-gain in number, 854,378; in percentage, 15.

POPULATION.- A careful estimate gives the gain during the year at 5,000 for the city and contiguous suburbs- making a total of not less than 40,000.

MINOR ITEMS.- The records show an increase in number of telephones used of 981, or 33 percent. The exports of phosphate, cattle, lumber and fish all show large gains for the year. A number of industries of varied character have been added to the resources of the city.

Tampa achieves new distinction as the home of the Florida State Fair. For this conspicuous honor, it possesses every qualification and meets every requirement. [Continued] -mart of the most prosperous and, at the same time, most promising section of Florida, it is entitled to rank as the chief city of the State. While one other of the Florida cities may exceed it by a few thousand in population, Tampa discounts all competitors in the value and the volume of its commerce, of its business capital, of its banking resources, of its manufactured products.

It is with pride that Tampa points to the figures which lead this article, furnishing, in a nutshell, the vastness and the variety of its advantages. The visitor to the Florida State Fair will find, upon investigation, that the figures tell but little of the importance and wealth of the city.

Up to 1898, when the United States government selected Tampa and the mobilkization point for the army of invasion, which routed the Spanish power from Cuba, Tampa had attracted but little attention. Its streets were beds of sand. Its princioal thoroughfares were mere roadways, bordered largely by ramshackle structures that failed to accommodate even the embryon business of that day. Then, the great cigar manufacturing industry was in its infancy and the demonstration of whether or not Tampa could become the home of this gigantic enterprise had been only partially and imperfectly made.

[Continued] -of ten years ago. A decade has evolved a strapping young giant from the toddling infant. The Tampa of ten years ago was doing nothing, saying nothing and scarcely "sawing wood." In fact it was barely "holding its own." When the tide of immigration and of capital turned its way, it all but swamped the "things that were." But progress and prosperity soon became the tocsin of citizens old and new and the making of a city was begun, not with the blare of trumpets and the rattle of drums, but with the steady, preserving, determined strokes of that untiring, unfaltering, keep-at-it spirit that accomplishes what it plans and builds permanently for the future and its fortunes.

THE TAMPA OF TODAY.

What is Tampa today? What is it doing? We have space here but fro the "headlines. Under each of them may be spread a story of sterling interest.

Tampa is today composed, including its immediate environs, of 45,000 hustling, enterprising people.

It has two railroads, six banks, seven steamships or steamboat lines, the finest hotel in the South, the best street railway service of south Washington, three daily newspapers, a large and active Board of Trade, a new channel to its docks now being deepened to 20 feet, under con-[break]

GREEN SPRINGS HOTEL.

This popular house is being reparied, enlarged, refitted and generall modernized and put in an up-to-date style. Large and spacious verandas nearly surrounded the house, one on the lower story and one on the upper, a long and roomy cooler between the two main houses affords shade and comfort to those seeking to escape the torrid heat. The Hotel is beautifully situated on a lot dotted with fine specimens of live oeaks festooned with Spanish moss, and other shrubs and plans. A beautiful view of the bay is had from the verandas and the windows on the front and two sides of the main houses. For fire pleaces, two up stairs and two down, heat the entire house to comfortable temeprature in cold weather.

The famous Green Springs water noted for its high medicinal properties and effecting so many cures in cases where the best physicians have failed, is piped into the hotel and guests or invalids may remain in their own room and drink at the fountain head as it were. Bath rooms have been put in an hot or cold baths in the miraculous curative waters may be had at any time. Rheumatism, Indigestion, Eczema, Catarrh and many other maladies have been cured in hundreds of cases. Green Springs is sitauted at the north end of old Tampa Bay and is only one and one-half hour's ride from Port Tampa and St. Petersburg. Launch service between these points is had every day.

it has 200 cigar factories, its output of Clear Havana cigars being greater than that of all the other cities of the United States combined. This year, Tampa will make 225,000,00 of these cigars and its product for 1905 will be larger than that of Havana, Cuba, the birthplace and for years, the undisputed home of this industry.

In this cigar manufacturing industry, an army of skilled operatives its employed every month of the year and the amount of the payrolls of the cigar factories of Tampa alone for the present year will reach $7,500,000 while the value of the product wil reach $15,000,000. These are the figures of ONLY ONE INDUSTRY, remember, and Tampa challenges comparison with any city of 50,000 population in the country in the showing thus made.

[Continued] -not of the cheap and temporary sort, but substantial brick and stone business houses and neat and commodious residences.

Incidentally, it may be noted here that TAMPA HAS NOT HAD A BUSINESS FAILURE THIS YEAR.

Again, Tampa is not a one industry town. While the cigar business naturally dominates and the city is largely dependent upon it to keep up the flow of the life-blood of trade through its arteries, varied enterprises are sprining up every few days. It has recently become the centre of the naval stores industry, employing thousands of workers. It is the shipping and trading depot for all the rich South Florida citrus fruit and vegetable growing section.  It handles yearly between 100,000 and 150,000 head of cattle, which are shipped to Cuba from the ranges of this portion of the State. Its fish business is enormous, the shipments for the year past amounting to 3,789,694 pounds, which is increasing at the rate of 25 per cent. per year. A half million tons of phosphate rock are shipped annually. Hillsborough County

HILLSBOROUGH COUNTY COURT HOUSE.

Hillsborough County, second largest in population and richest in resources of the State of Florida, has developed so rapdily in both that it has outstripped all competitors and stands forth now without a peer in the Peninsular. From 1890 to 1900, its population more than doubled, the increase being, in actual figures, 141 per cent.; from 1900 to the present, it has kept up this excellent record and fully 50,000 people dwell contentedly within its borders. Blessed by all the natural advantages that could be desired, with an energetic and industries citizenry, it is an ideal place of residence for both winter and summer.

In winter, it possesses all the charms of the Florida climate, which attracts, annually, thousands of visitors from the north; in summer, favored by an extensive sea coast, receiving the cooling breezes from the Gulf, if offers equal advantages as a hot-weather resort. All in all, Nature has furnished few more delightful regions for the habitation of man than Hillsborough, the crown-jewel of the rich counties of Florida.

LOCATION AND EXTENT.

Hillsborough County lies between 82 and 83 degrees, west longitude, and 27 degrees, 10 minutes and 28 degrees, 10 minutes, north latitude. It has a salt water coast-line of 150 miles. It is the fourth county northward from the extreme souther portion of the State and possesses a semi-tropical climate which is not equaled elsewhere for salubriousness.

Hillsborough County has an area of about 1,300 square miles, or 832,000 acres, the land being either level or gently rolling. On the West Coast it often rises into rounded hillocks, randing in altitude from 50 to 200 feet.

ITS FERTILE SOIL.

The soils of Hillsborough County vary in character, and are known as high and low hammock, high and low pine, reclaimed salt water and fresh water marsh, cypress swamp and a mixed or chocolate soil in which clay is mingled with a sandy loam.

The hammocks are considered the best lands, because they are of deeper, richer nature, stand droughts better and are covered with such hardwoods as the oack, hickory, magnolia, palmetto, and other well known varieties. These lands produce large crops of fruits and vegetables and are the kinds best adapted to profitable and general vegetable culture.

Hillsborough County is noted for the diversity of its agricultural and horticultural products. All the crops which can be produced anywhere in Florida can be produced in Hillsborough. The eastern portions of the county are well adapted to the production of stable crops, such as corn, sugar cane, potatoes, rice and kindred products and, although these will also thrive on the west coast, yet  that region seems better adapted to the growth of fruits, especially the semi-tropical, owing to its very mild climate, the equability of the seasons and the currents of air that blow over it from the Gulf of Mexico.

Both sections are well adapted to cattle raising; the forests, especailly the flat-woods of the interior, being a mass of verdure during the rainy season.

Truck farming is one of the chief industries of the county. Hundreds of small truck farms or gardens are to be found throughout this section, and all who have engaged in this branch of industry have received rich rewards. Excellent fast freght facilties place Hillsborough county growers in close communication with the Northern and Eastern markets.

Asparagus, beans, brocoli, Brussel sprouts, beets, cabbages, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cress, cucumbers, egg plants, lettuce, mustard, musk and water melons, okra, onions, parsley, peanutes, peas, sweet and Irish potatoes, peppers, tomatoes, turnips, pumpkins, radishes, spinach, squashes, strawberries.

Two crops of sweet potatoes may be planted each year and the yield ranges from 100 to 600 bushels per acre, according to the character of the soil. Two crops of Irish potatoes may also be produced in a season, the first being planted in January or February, and the second in September or October. South Florida is invariably first in the Northern markets, hence this section si a more favorable one for gardening as the producer who is first to market his products receives the top market prices.

The crops most generally raised for Northern markets by truck farmers are cabbages, cauliflower, celery, cucumbers, egg plant, strawberries and tomatoes. Celery grows in rank luxirance on suitable soil, and is one of the best paying crops to which the attention of Hillsborough County farmers has been directed.

Cabbages do well and often net $500 per acre. Egg plants bring from $5 to $20 per barrel and tomatoes range from $5 per crate at the beginning of the season to 75 cents at the close.

The raising of early strawberries for the Northern markets is becoming a greater industry every year, and whole communities, in season, devote their attention tot he cultivation of this paying crop. A small amount of capital is necessary to engage in it, large and quick returns nearly always follow. The earliest shipments bring from $1 to $2 a-

RAPID DEVELOPMENT

Hillborough County has developed rapidly in the past decade. Its advantages have been industriously heralded throughout the country by judicious advertising and those who have come from distant sections to cast their lots among its fertile fields and teeming groves have written to their friends to follow them. In addition to the strong and prosperous army of "native sons" an energetic and resourceful element of Northern and Western people has settled within the limits of the county, devoting their efforts to increasing the sum total of its wealth and prosperity. Of all these people, Hillsborough County is proud and to all of them it yields the first fruits of its riches. There is room for many more and they are steadily coming. During the past three years, hundreds of families have removed to this country from other States and all are contented with their adopted land.

Good Government.

Hillsborough County is now enjoying good government and its funds are being wisely and economically used, to the greatest benefit of all the people. The county administration is in the hands of a Board of County Commissioers, composed of J.N. Holmes, J. Mack. Towne, C.B. Ware, G.F. Altman and J.L. Jackney. This Board has inaugurated many reforms and improvements during its term of office and the results of its wise supervision are already beginning to be appreciably felt.

-$400,000 for the construction of good roads throughout the county. Much of this road work has been done and some of it is still in progress. What will be the most magnificent driveway in the South, the Bayshore Boulevard, skirting the Bay from Tampa to Ballast Point, will soon be completed. Hard roads have been built between the principal towns of the county and the improvement effected has been wonderful.

Among the recent works of the County Commissioners is a large and well-equipped poor farm, by means of which the entire pauper list of the county has been wiped out and those who have been hitherto dependent upon charity, are now enabled to earn their subsistence by the cultivation of remunerative crops. The poor farm provides excellent accommodations and is located on one of the best farms in the county. The County Commissioners, by this institution, save thousands of dollars annually to the taxpayer.

THRIVING TOWNS.

Besides Tampa, the county is dotted with thriving towns, which have grown at a remarkable rate during the past few years and which promise to assume the proportions of cities in the near future. Among these, each populated by a hustling and ambitious citizenry, may be mentioend Plant City, St. Petersburg, Clearwater, Dunedin, West Tampa, Seffner, Brandon, Largo, Bellair, Valrico, Tarpon Springs, Sutherland, Green Springs, not to mention a number of farming and fruit growing settlements and naval stores depots that will soond find prominent plances on the map.

WHERE LOCATED AND HOW TO REACH MANATEE COUNTY.

Manatee County lies in the extreme souther portion of the West Coast of Peninsular Florida. It is lcoated on the Gulf of Mexico between latitudes 27 and 28; its shores are washed by the blue waters of the gulf stream whose warm current temeprs the climate and reduces the chances of visitation from the forst king to a minimum, hence Manatee County's location is indeed the most favored in the sunny clime.

Being about fifty miles south of Tampa, Manatee County can be reached in a three or four hours' ride either by rail or water. Both railroad and steamers maintain the year round a double dialy passenger service, and during the Fair especially low rates are made in order to give every one an opportunity to visit this fertile and productive county. You should take advantage of this cheap rate to see the "Land of the Manatee." If you fail to see Manatee County, your trip to South Florida will be incomplete.

Climactic Conditions

Manatee, perhaps more than any other county in Florida, has stronger claims to perfectness of climate. Situated as it is on the extreme southern portion of the west coast of Peninsular Florida, its location naturally makes its climate congenial and delightful, then add to this its vast expans of water protection, which almost surround the county, and you can readily see that we have a climate unequaled by any other section in the United States. The thermometer seldom reaches as high as 95 degrees during the summer months, and the mercury rarely ever goes below 40 degrees in the winter, with an average temperature of between 60 and 70 degrees for the winter months.

Soil.

The soil of Manatee County is far famed for its fertility and productiveness. Probably no county in the state can boast of as rich pine and hammock lands as the Mantee section. As some enthusiasts have said it will "grow to perfection anything you plant."

Citrus Fruits.

The soil and climatic conditions of Mantee County are so adapted that the finest oranges and other citrus fruits in the world are grown here.

In brief, the orange, lemon, lime, grapefuirt, avocado or alligator pears, guavas, mangoes and numerous other citrus fruits grow here to perfectness.

Vegetable and Agricultural Interests.

Manatee County for years has been depended upon to furnish, you might say, the nation, with all kinds of the earliest vegetables, and she has never yet disappointed the northern markets. The agricultural resources of Mantee County are unexcelled. All field crops can be successfully grown, including corn and oats and even cotton is not an unknown crop.

Industries.

The chief industries of the county are turpentine, lumber, phosphate, Fuller's earth, stock raising and vegetable and citrus fruit growing.

THE REAL TROPICAL REGION OF FLORIDA

While Lee County is one of the newest and least populated of the Florida Counties her exhibit at the State Fair will convince any one that this county can produce a greater vareity of fruits and vegetables than any other in the State of Florida. This is because she has rich soils, and a climate that cannot be equaled for its mildness and salubriousness. With its one hundred miles of coast, washed by the warm waters of the Gulf, the temperature of which is so warm even in the midst of winter as to make bathing in its open waters enjoyable, together with the souther position of the county, being only 150 miles north of the Cuban coast, while on the other hand 350 miles south of Jaksonville and 159 miles south of Tampa, gives Lee County a climate as tropical as that of the island of Cuba.

As proof of this the visitor to the great State Fair at Tampa will find at the Lee County booth bearing cocoanut trees with blossoms and cocoanuts in every stage of growth. Hundreds of green cocoanuts, and the graceful palms of the tree used in the decoration of the booth. Here also will be found those tender and delicious tropical fruits, the avacoda, or alligator pear, the mango, sapadillo, sugar apple, royal poinciana, paw-paw. Small specimens of these trees will be xhibited transplanted in tubs, and the ripe fruis will be seen in large-three gallon jars, showing these fruits in their natural ripe state.

But Lee County will not stop at tropical fruits. Its reputation for grape fruit is par excellence and becoming world wide and is greatly in demand. Nowhere in the world does this fruit thrive better than it does on the soil of Lee County. Trees can be found in the county that have attained the great size for fruit trees of seven feet in circumference around the trunks. The exhibition of this fruit will bear out the claim made for its excellent quality, as many boxes will be shown. The fact that Lee County took first prize last year for the finest box of oranges, shows that she can grow fancy oranges also, and can send grape fruit and oranges to market earlier than any other county, and keep them on the trees later in the spring.

Then the interested observer will note on exhibition the citron of commerce, fine lemons equal to the forieng grown fruit, tangerines, mandarins, shaddocks, water melons, pineapples, both shedded and grown in the open.

Another leading industry is that of growing early vegetables for market, Lee County truckers being shipping in the middle of October and continue shipping all through the fall, winter and spring months and until the 1st of June. At the Fair will be found many crates of toamtoes, egg plants and peppers. These crops are now being shipped in car loads from Lee County, and brining from $1.50 to $3.00 per crate.

Another valuable crop in Lee County is sugar cane. Examine the cane and syrup on exhibition, and you will find it difficult to duplicate them. There will also be specimens of potatoes, string beans, rice, peanuts, cassava and many other crops.

It will be worth your time to examine the splendid collection of preserves, fruits and jellies, the guavas being grown in great quantities and making the finest jellies and preserves as also the sea grape and other fruits.

An interesting article at the main exhibit will be Tos. E. Edison's first phonograph, which has been at his labroatory in Ft. Myers for the past twenty years.

ALACHUA COUNTY

Alachua County, Florida is situated nearly in the geographical center of the State as it is possible for a county to be.

It containes 1620 square miles, of which $18,500 acres are above water and susceptible of cultivation. Its soil is variegated, running from poor pine land through the various grades to the richest hammock and swamp lands. Its population is 38,763. It contains one city (Gainesville, the seat of the University of Florida) of 6000 population and 24 towns, villages and hamlets with populations of from 100 to 4500 souls.

It has within its boundary 277 miles of railroad in daily operation valued for taxation at $1,126,600.00 Its rivers are the Sante Fe, Ichetuckneee and the far-famed Suwannee. Its lakes are the Sante Fe, Alto, Newsman's Little Orange, Wauberg, Lochloosa, Levy, Tuskawilla, Jennings and Alachua.

Its schools number, (white) 93 and 90 teachers and 3560 pupils; (black), 50 with thirty eight teachers and 3170 pupils. It has 147 churches and no liquor saloons. In this country prohibition prohibits.

It has 13 phosphate mines in active operation.

It has 19 Naval Stores plants.

It has 25 saw mills, 10 shingle mills, two basket and crate factories and one veneering mill.

It has 25 grist mills, one rice mills, three moss ginneries, 24 cotton ginneries, one wood oil plant, one coffin factory (only one in the State), four ice making plants, two cold storage plants, three bottling works, two variety works plants and one for the making of sash, doors and blinds, two large commercial fertilizer factories, one of the most complete publishing houses in the State (the Pepper Publishing Co.); four banks of loans and discounts, two newspapers and four magazines, two steam and one Chinese laundry, two extensive and five small wagon and carraige factories, one of the largest ("Spring Park") stock farms in the State, one large and one small electric light and power plant, one foundry and machine shop, one system of wate works (the purest water in the state), 25 irrigated and canvas covered truck farms, 30 orange groves in bearing, a large brick-making industry; machinery for making hard roads, consisting of steam crusher and roller, grading machine, portable tank, stump puller, etc. Two fruit and vegetable canneries, eight livery and sales stables.

The value of her farm products, live stock and poultry included $1,014,000 dollars worth. Her cotton, lint and seed $600,000, value of her phosphate output $825,000 dollars, upon which freight is paid to the amount of $363,000. The value of her lumber, manufacturers, fisheries, shingle and naval stores output $1,350,000, amounting in the aggregate to the handsome sum of $4,552,00 annually.

Her soil procudes cane, cotton, oats, rye, barley, rice and all kinds of vegetables every month in the year. She grows oranges, grape fruit, kumquarts, pine apples, Japan plums, Japan persimmons, guavas, apricots, plums, peaches, grapes, pomegranates, haws, bananas, pecans, chestnuts, chinquepins, walnuts, hickory nuts, winkie pins, strawberries, raspberries, dewberries, blackberries, mulberries, gooseberries, pears, quinces, celery, cassava, orria root, Jamaica ginger, datil, and the tabasco sauce pepper, ruby king, bull nose and all the other varieties, velvet beans, soja beans, pinders, potatoes, both Irish and sweet, and chufas and every variety of melon, while her forests produce tar, turpentine and rosin, moss and sisal hemp, and every variety of wood that grows on the peninsula.
