The Apollo 8 mission took place between December 21 (launch) and December 27 (landing) 1968. The astronauts were Frank Borman, Commander; William A. Anders, Lunar Module Pilot; and James A. Lovell, Jr., Command Module Pilot. It was the first manned spacecraft to leave Earth's gravity and successfully orbit the Moon.
