Dear Miss Stephens:
Thanks for your note of May 2nd:
My wife and I have long been members of [CORE], but have not been able to be too active in the local Berkeley group, though we have picketed a time or two at the Berkeley stores in support of the Southern students.
I hope that you and your friends, if you do come this far West on your tour, will contact us. If you should come West before June 24, we will be in town, in Oakland, California, at above address, phone 0L 2-7062, and we would try to get together a group of young people for a discussion meeting at our home. In addition, it is likely we could get an audience for you in several local groups, including the Friends' Meeting and possibly the University YM or YWCA. Of course, I know the local [CORE] group would want to visit with you, in Berkeley, and possibly some other groups I do not know about.
In any case, if and when you do start planning to come West, let me know, and I might be able to help you a little financially, too.
If your coming west should wait until next Fall, then, of course, the same thing would be true, and we could arrange some meetings for you. We could also, of course, offer you hospitality at our home. However, from June 24 to August 1, we shall be in Europe, and between August 1 and September 1 I shall be teaching in a Friends' manner summer school in the country. If you came then, you could come and be guests of our camp-school for a few days.
I am glad your worst days are over by now, and I want you to know that many, many people out here, students, faculty, and citizens generally are entirely with you and are very proud of you. Of course, there are the others, here, too.
I hope you write again if you have time, or before coming out, and I hope some time to see you face to face.
