CORE–The Challenge of Summer
The summer of 1960 presents the Congress of Racial Equality with an emergency situation and an opportunity. For several years, CORE has grown steadily–building more local CORE groups, developing direct but peaceful attacks on segregationist practices, and slowly building a national CORE staff.
Shortly after the wave of student sit-ins began in February, it became evident that the period of stead, careful growth for CORE was over: we were faced with the necessity of tripling our field service to meet a significant proportion of the requests for help.
Now, we face the summer…
with depleted resources…but
with a field staff of six ready to help sustain the sit-ins…
and
with an idea which YOU can help us to realize–an interracial Institute.
FIELD SERVICE NEEDS:
Six field workers for July, August, and September. Cost estimated at $1,000 per worker per month, including salary, travel, living expenses, and supporting office work, printing, postage. These field workers include CORE veterans James T. McCain and Gordon R. Carey; expelled student leaders Major Johns and Marvin Robinson; and Ulysses Prince of Atlanta University and Darwin Bolden, CORE Boycott Coordinator.
Summer field service Cost..........$18,000.00
INTERRACIAL ACTION INSTITUTE NEEDS:
Scheduled for Miami, Florida, August 14 to September 5, The Institute will train thirty persons from across the country in the theory of Gandhi's non-violent action as applied in actual action projects. A number of student sit-in leaders want to participate. The extent to which we can accept them will be a determining factor in the deepening understanding of nonviolence across the South. Most of the participants at the Institute, adults as well as students, will need full or partial scholarship aid. CORE will staff the Institute with its Executive Secretary as director, and with four assistants.
Estimated Cost (exclusive of promotionGandh$10,000.00
TOTAL SUMMER PROGRAM NEEDS…..$28,000.00
(It is hoped that special contributions given at this luncheon will cover these special summer needs of CORE. Please turn to back page.)
CORE Needs
This Luncheon Conference was called by Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt to secure financial support to carry on during the critical summer months CORE's program of education and training in nonviolent direct action methods. It is hoped that those attending this meeting will provide the $28, 000 needed. Contributions to this end are being sought in the following amounts:
One Contribution of $5,000
Two contributions of 2,500
Five Contributions of 1,000
Ten Contributions of 500
The remainder to be secured from smaller contributions. More than $5, 000 has already been secured from persons unable to attend this conference.
