[Every night] before I go to sleep I thank God that in some small way that I am able to help those of us who are denied our equal rights. I do not consider going to jail a sacrifice but a privilege.

Sixty days are not long to spend in jail. I'd do it again for a cause as great as the one I'm fighting for. I probably will have to again sense I am among those arrested March 12 during a mass demonstration of the FAMU students. I and my brother were among those who didn't turn back, though tear gas was used. It takes more than tear gas to turn me around.

March 17th, after my trial in which Eleven persons were tried and committed of disturbing the peace, public tranquility, + engaging in the righteous conduct. I among seven other persons decided to go to jail instead of paying our fines. It was decided that three people should stay out of jail.

To help carry on the good works 

March 18th, the eight of us met together at the Bethel Baptist Church for silent prayers. I was a little scared, but determination and prayers can withstand any obstacles.

About 11:30 after giving our decision at the Police Station we were taken to Leon County Jail. We were separated from the boys and taken to the "Bull Rank." The Bull Rank consisted of 4 cells in which there is a sink a commode and four beds in each one. There are two long tables and two benches to each table and there is a small shower at the end of the cells. types of people here crazy, abnormal drunkards, rogues etc. 

One must survive. 

We get two good meals a week.

they are on Sundays and Wednesdays.

And that is during visiting hours from 3 to 5, 2 to 5 Wednesdays and Sundays. We have had from twenty five to two hundred visitors. Many times they are not all able to see us. They come with encouraging words and plenty of food. They come to encourage us but many times I think that they are the one that are inspired.

one visit

Two ministers visits each day at 6:00 pm. They bring many encouraging words. On first Sunday, we were able to take communion with the boys. The sight of them staggered me. They had dreads an inch long and their hair seemed to have needed cutting for a month. It didn't really matter how they looked because I was so glad to see them.

We decided after our first night here that we would have bible class each night. The majority of the other prisoners participants. Bible class consists of

bible reading, prayer and singing, softly.

The attitudes of the jailers + matron were quite nasty. Our first week here we found out our first day here that we couldn't sing, have a typewriter or radio nor could we talk [too] loud. After the lights were put out at nine o'clock, that night jailer would come around and threaten to put us in the slammer. The slammer is a small, dark, dusty place with little air as described by the other prisoners. They weren't going to put one in the slammer without the rest we had all agreed.

Mail hadn't been brought to either of us our first week here. A week in jail and no mail seemed kind of strange so we asked our daily usual night visitor (the jailor ) after he had threatened to put us in the slammer about our mail. He said to ask the matron in the morning. This we did and also asked for more linen since

we had only gotten one sheet. This is the conversation that took place. Girl - We would like to have two sheets for our bed please. Matron - I cannot give you but one sheet that is the rule. Girl - Well I can't sleep with a blanket next to my body and these blankets are so nasty I wouldn't wrap a dog in them. Matron - I just follow orders. They knew what to expect when they put you all in here. Girl - They didn't put us in here the city did. Matron - We are not ignorant (I think she was trying to convince herself more than us). When you're put in here you don't get any extra [privileges]. Girl - we don't want anything extra we just think that it is time for a change (She went out mad [sic] and came back with the night jailer. He said - What is all this. We told you when you came here that you were to be treated no better than the other prisoners. Girl - may I say something please. He: No! We ask all of the questions

Girl - I can't say anything. He - no, do you want to be put in the slammer. I don't know what has happened but the past two weeks we haven't been bothered by them much. Maybe they were told to lay off. Anyway its one relies [sic] off our minds. This week we were attacked mentally by one of the crazy women here. She has made all kinds of threats. She's threatened to cut our heads + put our eyes out. We're sitting on the edge of dynamite. I hope that it doesn't explode in our faces. Geech [sic], a negro trustee who is very good to us watches over us as much as he possibly can. He has told a lady here to keep an eye on us and give aid if R.R. starts something. That doesn't help too much because she works all day and goes home sometimes and stays until nine o'clock. If the bomb does

explode in our face we girls hope to be prepared.

Patricia and I were able to work three days before we were fired. The reason, they gave for the action was because we were late. 

I think the reason for their hasty decision was because we were talking to an FSU student on the lawn during visiting hours. The white student are not allowed to visit us. They were turned around before.

Each of us received from five to ten letters a day. They are received from states allowed [sic]. It makes us all feel good to receive letters. It makes jail seem less harder, colder, and the food more bearable.

Though we were in jail Palm Sunday it was as beautiful an

occasions ever. We all wore crosses that were made the night before. Enough were made for the other women prisoners also. we received many visitors among those was Robert Coleman (My boyfriend.) It doesn't matter where you are Palm Sunday if you have God in your heart. It can be just as beautiful an occasion as it ever has been. 

If you have God in your heart you can conquer bitterness and hatred for those of your fellow man that are trying to demise [sic] human beings their equal rights. I do not feel bitterness towards them. I only pity them. Remember what Jesus said dying on the cross, "forgive them father for they know not what they do."
