General Note
Fessenden Academy was opened in 1868 by Thomas B. Ward as a place to instruct local freedmen. Classes took place in a log cabin. In 1891, Ferdinand S. Fessenden of Boston paid for a new two-story building nearby, and this building and the property were deeded to the American Missionary Association before Fessenden's death in 1899. Joseph L. Wiley became principal in 1898. The school closed in 1951.
