Description

A telegram from Phil May to General Albert H. Blanding regarding the lights at an amusement park at Jacksonville Beach. May is suggesting the lights at the park aided the enemy submarine in destroying two American ships off the coast of Jacksonville. There was actually only one American ship destroyed that day, the SS Gulfamerica.

On the evening of April 10, 1942, the SS Gulfamerica was hit by a German U-boat torpedo four miles off the coast of Jacksonville Beach. The oil tanker went up in flames and sank, killing 19 of the 48 on board.
