Accompanying note: "Sixteen miles of complete Barge Canal are shown in these two photographs [MSC4908 & 4909]. Right photo, looking west into the Gulf of Mexico, from the U. S. 19 Highway Bridge in foreground, shows a nearly completed segment of the canal which reaches from a point seven miles into the Gulf, inland to the bridge site. The highway bridge in the foreground is about 50 per cent completed."
