Ruth Bryan Owen 2nd Pilgrimage to Washington ------- Annual Trip to National Capital of “Best Young Citizens” Starts Feb. 25 ------- A second Patriotic Pilgrimage to our national capital as guests of Mrs. Ruth Bryan Owen, member of congress for the Fourth district of Florida, is soon to be made by a selected group of boys and girls, the “best young” citizens” from the 18 counties of the district. A special pullman car for this group will be carried by the Florida East Coast train, “The Miamian,” scheduled to leave Miami at 9 a.m., Wednesday, February 25. Boarding this car at Miami will be Mrs. Walter S. Buckingham, one of the official chaperones of the trip; the representatives of Monroe county, Miss Lorraine Caviness and Fred Knight, both of Key West; and the representatives of Dade county, Miss Mary Louise Dorn of South Miami, and Garland Wynn of Homestead. Also as Mrs. Owen’s guest entraining at this point will be Miss Carlotta Cubillas of Miami. The next group to join the party as the train moves up the East Coast will be the Broward county winners, Miss Mildred Stevens of Fort Lauderdale, and Don Moeller of Dania, who will board the train at 9:37 a.m. at Fort Lauderdale. At West Palm Beach at 10:45 a.m. the Palm Beach county winners, Miss Carolyn Mock of Pahokee, and Roger Fain of Boynton, will join the party. The next stop will be a special stop at Stuart to pick up the Martin county delegates, Miss Merle Pharr and Wilbur Jones, both of Stuart. At Fort Pierce at 12:05 p.m. five more will join the crowd, namely H.E. Spaulding, principal of Fort Pierce high school, one of those in charge of the party; the St. Lucie county winners, Miss Edith van Landingham and Harold Hornbeak, both of Fort Pierce, and the Okeechobee county winners, Miss Athleon Alderman and John Davis, both of Okeechobee. Three more will board at Vero Beach, Miss Valeria Twitchell and Leslie Goodrich, both of Vero Beach, winners from Indian River county, and Walter S. Buckingham of Vero Beach, resident district secretary of Mrs. Owen and organizer of the party. About 1 o’clock the train will stop at Melbourne to pick up the representatives of two counties, from Brevard county, Miss Audrey Weatherington of Melbourne, and Donald Frison of Titusville, and from Osceola county, Miss Jane Pugh of Kissimmee and Willis Rosenthal of St. Cloud. Five more will board the train at New Smyrna at 2:45 p.m. One of these will be Mrs. Elston Webster of New Smyrna, one of the chaperones. From Seminole county will come Miss Virginia Earle and Edwin Shinholser, both of Sanford, and from Volusia county Miss Emma Hayden of New Smyrna, and Vernon Cade of Seville. At Daytona Beach the Orange county delegates will join the party. Miss Virginia Tilden of Winter Garden, and Comer Nelson of Ocoee. Again a special stop will be made, this time at Bunnell to pick up the winners from Flagler county, Miss Mary Elizabeth Browning and Clare Biddle, both of Bunnell. Four more will swell the crowd at St. Augustine at 4:40 p.m. From Putnam county will come Miss Elizabeth Price of Crescent City and Thomas Ross of Melrose. From St. Johns county will come Miss Netha Campbell of Hastings, and George Green of St. Augustine. Representatives from the remaining two counties will board at Jacksonville at 5:30 p.m. The two from Clay county will be Miss Nettie West and Allen Geiger both of Green Cove Springs. The two from Duval county will be Miss Mary Rogers and Ishmael Snyder, both of Jacksonville. The evening meal will be served on a pullman diner at the station at Jacksonville and at 7 o’clock the Seaboard Air Line’s train, “Southern States Special,” will take the car on the second lap of the trip to Washington. What Mrs. Owen may have planned at Washington where the party will arrive at 2:20 p.m., Thursday, February 26, is not known except that there will be almost three days of strenuous [sightseeing] and study of our great national government at close range. There will be about 40 young people tired at [bedtime] from walking, looking and listening and there will be that same 40 refreshed by morning and ready to continue to “do” Washington with the most competent guide in the world to whose touch doors open as if by magic. The start for home will be made on the Seaboard’s train New York-Florida Limited, leaving Washington at 11:59 p.m. Saturday night, February 28. On Monday morning at 4:27 p.m. the special car will be left on siding at Vero Beach with all hands asleep until daylight. Then on Monday, March 2, from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. a grand reunion will be held here in the heart of the Fourth district as a climax of the whole trip. At this reunion the Brigaders of last year’s trip and the folks from home, delegations from every county, will welcome the returning pilgrims and enjoy with them their account of the trip. Men of great renown will be present to address the gathered delegations but that is another story and the plans for that day are still in the making. Summerall, Holt, Spivey Speakers Reunion March 2 ------- Ruth Bryan Owen Secures Speakers of National Renown for Reunion at Vero Beach ------- Speakers of renown have responded to the invitation of Mrs. Ruth Bryan Owen to be present and address the “best young citizens” of the Fourth District of Florida at the reunion at Vero Beach on Monday, March 2, which has been arranged as a climax to the second annual Patriotic Pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. Among these speakers are Gen. Charles P. Summerall, Florida’s ranking army officer; Dr. Ludd M. Spivey, president of Southern college at Lakeland, and Dr. Hamilton Holt, president of Rollins college at Winter Park. It is expected that Dr. Edward Conradi, president of the Florida State College for Women at Tallahassee, also will be present. Mrs. Owen will be present. She will accompany the boys and girls on their trip back from Washington. The reason for calling this celebration a reunion is that the boys and girls who went on the first trip to Washington, last April, one boy and one girl from each of the 18 counties of the district will be present to meet and greet those just back from the second trip. These boys and girls are coming from many points in the state, some from Florida University at Gainesville, where they are enrolled, some from the State College for Women, some from places where they are at work, or from their own homes. Apparently they are all coming, all except “Bill” Myers of the University of Florida, who will be at Fort McPherson taking the examination preparatory to entering West Point as one of Mrs. Owen’s appointees. Also to this reunion are coming delegations from each of the counties of the district, headed by the county superintendents of public instruction and members of the county school boards and including the “nominees” from each senior high school, that is, the boy and girl selected as best young citizens in their schools, but unable to go on the trip to Washington because the personnel of that trip was limited to one boy and one girl from each county. Some of the counties are providing transportation for all of their nominees and are sending one teacher from each school. In these delegations will also be many citizens, men and women, who are interested in Mrs. Owen’s program for stimulating good citizenship among the boys and girls and who wish to hear the addresses. The meetings will be open to the public. The formal program will begin at 9 o’clock in the morning at the Vero Beach high school auditorium which is ample to accommodate a large audience. The plans for the day’s activities are in the hands of local committees. These local committees will work under the guidance of the Vero Beach chamber of commerce and the community will be host to the visiting delegations. The women’s organizations of the community are planning a luncheon at noon for the boys and girls just back from Washington, those who went on the trip last year, the nominees from the various schools and the honor guests and speakers of the day. An afternoon program will be resumed at the high school auditorium to which the delegations and the public at large will be invited. Special features of entertainment will be presented through the courtesy of the Vero Beach high school. There will be an address of welcome by Alex MacWilliam, mayor of Vero Beach, to which Mrs. Owen will make response. The order of speaking of the distinguished guests is not yet known but plans are being formed rapidly. The day’s activities will be over at 3 o’clock in the afternoon in order to allow the delegates to get a good start back to their own counties. With these delegations will go their boy and girl members of the second pilgrimage just back from Washington, home from the biggest trip of their lives.
