Accompanying note: "The picture of 'The Branded Hand' which appears in this book, is taken from an original daguerreotype now in possession of Dr. Vincent Y. Bowditch, of Boston, who kindly furnished the author with a faithful facsimile. Capt. Walker had the daguerreotype taken soon after the branding, at the request of Dr. Bowditch's father."
