General Note
The Space Shuttle employs a combination of lightweight glass fiber tiles, high-temperature insulation, and a variety of blanket materials for insulation. The large surface area versus vehicle mass substantially lowers aerodynamic heating so that the surface material can dissipate the heat without ablating.
