The History of Water in Florida
Florida Tackle and Gun Club to the Hudson Pulp and Paper Corporation, June 2, 1950
From: Governor Warren, Correspondence, 1949-1953 (Series 235, Box 75, Folder 4)
In the following letter, the president of a sportsmen's organization asks the general manager of the Hudson Pulp and Paper Corporation in Palatka whether the company's expansion plans include a water reclamation plant to protect the St. Johns River from pollution.

Hudson Pulp and Paper Corporation
Palatka, Florida
Att: Mr. Basko, General Manager
Gentlemen:
We have read with considerable interest the recent announcement by Governor Warren in various state newspapers that you and your associates expect to soon spend some 10 millions of dollars on expanding your Palatka Pulp Mill.
It is very gratifying to know that your operations to date have been so profitable as to justify such a huge expenditure.
However, Mr. Basko, while this organization and many others of a similar nature are glad to see new industries locate, prosper, and expand in Florida, we are also vitally concerned regarding continued destructive pollution in our finest fresh water streams. We, therefore, would like very much to know if the Hudson Pulp and Paper Corporation expects to allocate part of its funds for expansion for the construction of an adequate reclamation plant so as to safe guard our marine life in the St. Johns River and it's [sic] tributaries. This is of just as much importance to the future economy of Florida as it is to that of such states as Michigan and Pennsylvania where adequate industrial reclamation plants are now required by law.
We will greatly appreciate an early reply.
Sincerely,
FLORIDA TACKLE & GUN CLUB
