Jazz is America’s music. It originated in African-American communities during the late 19th and early 20th centuries, but quickly became a popular national trend. Jazz defies easy definition; it is as much about the performance and the performers as it is the music itself. Syncopation, swing rhythms, and improvisation are hallmarks of the genre. Florida has been home to some remarkable jazz performers, including Ida Goodson, the Miami Latin Jazz Ensemble, and the Billy Rolle Jazz Band.
