Description
Starts with a military honor guard carrying an enormous cake into the gala dinner. Governor Bryant cuts the cake and the speeches begin. Johnson's remarks include comments on the unity of the U.S., "omens of change in the climate between the East and West," a reference to the Cuban missile crisis ("a turning point in the entire Cold War"), winning the space race, doubling the nuclear warhead stockpile and a litany of recent military build-up, and the upswing in the economy. He then mentions social programs, the environment, tax rates, etc. Then he makes a plea to face the problems of human rights, the "inequality of our Negro citizens." A very strong speech for civil rights.
