Summary:

This collection consists of digital copies (produced by the Archives) of 42 16th-century engraved illustrations by Theodore de Bry. The engravings are from the second volume in de Bry's series Grands Voyages chronicling the European exploration of the Americas. The second volume, "Der ander Theil, der newlich erfundenen Landschafft Americae, von dreyen Schiffahrten, so die Frantzosen in Floridam" (1591), was an account of the French attempt to establish a settlement in Florida and their experiences with the Timucua. De Bry's engraved illustrations are the earliest European images of Florida. A Flemish engraver, bookseller and publisher, de Bry produced the copper engravings with the help of his sons Jan Theodor and Jan Israel. As none of them had ever been to Florida, they were guided in their efforts by watercolors created by Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues (c. 1533-1588), a French artist and mapmaker who was a member of the 1564 Laudonniere expedition.

The engravings from which the Archives produced these digital copies are from the personal collection of Michael W. and Dr. Linda Fisher.  The digital copies include both full plates - illustrations and accompanying text - as well as just the illustrations themselves.  They are available in both TIFF and JPEG image formats.
