This agreement entered into this 1st day of January 1867 between C.J. Garwood of the first part and Peter Lindsey [sic] (Freedman) of the second part, Witnessesth that the said Peter Mindsey is to hire to the said C.J. Garwood his two sons Sam & Martin for the current year, for hands upon his farm, they are to do any & all kind of work necessary on a farm, and to be subject to the order and directions of said Garwood & his foreman Bill Lewis. They are to lose all time taken without my consent, and in case of sickness, so prostrate that others have to be hired in their place, they are to lose the time. In case of bad conduct, disobedience of orders, he said Peter agrees to correct them & enforce obedience. The said C.J. Garwood agrees to pay to said Peter for the services of the above named boys Sam & Martin, the sum of one hundred & fifty dollars for the two, three suits of comfortable clothes each, consisting of jacket, pants & shirts and one hat and one pr. shoes, & in case of sickness to furnish all necessary medicines & attention. The payment is to be made at the end of the year & in case of death or running off of either of the boys or failure on their part to comply with the contract, then the payment to be in proportion to services rendered, in witness whereof we have hereunto written [?] our names this 1st day of Jany 1867. State of Florida Jefferson County James Denham came personally before me and made oath that the foregoing contract was read & explained to the laborers therein named and that they voluntarily executed in his presence.
