State of Florida Jefferson County This agreement made and entered into this 14th day of January A.D. 1867 between T.J. McKain of the first part, and Ephraim High of the second part, both of the state and county of said witnesseth. That for the consideration hereinafter mentioned, the party of the second part doth covenant and agree to furnish twelve hands himself included, and labor for the said T.J. McKain upon the plantation of Mrs. Mary McKain from the date of these presents until the 1st day of January A.D. 1868. That during said time they will labor to the best of their skill, knowledge, and ability performing the customary labors of plantation laborers, such as tilling the soil, fencing, taking care of the stock. [crossed out version of previous sentence: That during said time they will labor to the best of their skill, knowledge, and ability performing the customary labors of plantation laborers, such as tilling the soil, fencing, repairing and building houses taking care of the stock]. That they will labor from daylight till dark with the customary allowance of time for breakfast and dinner. The party of the first part agrees to furnish the team and farming utensils to cultivate said plantation, also houses for said party of the second part, and the said part of the first part also agrees to feed said plough animals. The party of the second part promises and agrees to furnish their own rations. It is further agreed that the said T.J. McKain is to personally superintend the cultivation of said plantation. Finally, the first party of the first part for the faithful discharge of the duties above named by the party of the second part, the said Thomas J. McKain promises and agrees to give the said party of the second part, one half of the entire crop raised and gathered on said plantation. Said party of the second part are to stock the ploughs and keep the wagon in running order at their expense.
