Monticello, Jefferson County, Florida, January 7, 1867 Articles of agreement between R. C. Parkhill, contractor, and the Freedmen whose names are signed below, witnesseth that the said Parkhill agrees and binds himself to give to said Freedmen as wages, one-third of the cotton,half the corn, potatoes, syrup and other crops raised on the plantation of said R. C. Parkhill on the consideration that the Freedmen labor faithfully and diligently the usual number of hours in each day of the week during the year 1867, and in consideration of said work so to be performed, said Parkhill further agrees to give them, the said laborers, ten bushels of corn and thirty pounds of pork. It is further agreed that if any of said Freedmen leave the place without permission, he is to forfeit at the rate [of] one dollar per day, and if any of said Freedmen shall stay away longer than one week, said Freedmen is to be considered as having left the place and forfeited his portion of the crop. It is further agreed by said Freedmen that they will treat with respect said Parkhill, family, and agent
