Doctor Herbert L. Bryans, son of a physician, native of Georgia, almost lifetime resident of Pensacola, was a humanitarian interested in the health and well-being of his fellow man. He spent his life in this cause.
After the early years of education, he graduated in 1911 from Emory University School of Medicine (Atlanta College of Physicians), following this with a year of postgraduate study at the New York Post-Graduate Medical School and Hospital. He returned to Pensacola and entered the private practice of medicine. With the advent of World War I, he entered the Army Medical Corps and was on detached duty with the British Royal Army Medical Corps in England, Belgium and France. He served with distinction both in this country and abroad. Briefly, he served with the United States Veterans Bureau before returning to Pensacola to continue his private practice of medicine.
Many local projects for the improvement of health services and facilities were recipients of Dr. Bryan's capabilities and interest. He was Chief of Staff of the Sacred Heart Hospital and Baptist Hospital and worked diligently for the establishment of the Escambia General Hospital and the Escambia County Health Department. He provided a high caliber of leadership in medical nursing, rehabilitation and welfare programs and gave unstintingly of his time and talent to assist them. For several of these, he was given awards for meritorious service.
Dr. Bryans served as a member of the Florida State Board of Health from 1941 until 1957, during most of which time he was President. He also served long and faithfully in the Escambia County Medical Society and the Florida Medical Association. Of both he became President and contributed in many ways to their success. He was a member of numerous local organizations, professional and honorary societies and was a thirty-second degree Mason.
Dr. Bryans was born in Griffin, Georgia, on September 16, 1889 and died in Pensacola on June 8, 1961. Surviving are his widow, Mrs. Edna Mae Snyder Bryans, a son, Robert Lee Bryans II and a sister, Mrs. H. Paul Mathison, all of Pensacola. He will long be remembered for his contributions to the development of public health in Florida.
