Alligators have always attracted tourists to the Sunshine State. The St. Augustine Alligator Farm opened for business in 1893.

While relations between Seminoles and Gators pre-date the college football teams, the wrestling of alligators by Seminole people dates to the Twentieth Century. Created to satisfy the preconceptions of tourists, this was a tradition invented at tourist attractions in South Florida.
