State censuses were first compiled in 1845 and every ten years after until 1945. The state census supplemented the federal census carried out at the end of each decade and was used for the determination of legislative electoral districts. The second census was authorized in 1854 (Chap. 629, Laws) and the Secretary of State was responsible for its coordination. The state census was abolished in 1949 (Senate Joint Resolution #46, 1949). The federal census has therefore served as Florida's census record since 1950.
