African
For our purposes, we define the term “African music” to include any of the regional musical styles of Sub-Saharan Africa. Percussion instruments such as the Djembe are essential tools for making this highly rhythmic music. Enslaved Africans carried their musical traditions with them to the Americas, where they served as a reservoir of inspiration for Caribbean, Latin, blues, jazz, gospel, and hip-hop. These genres are performed all over Florida, as is music with more direct ties to the original African traditions.
